Spring Track and Field News!

Southern is looking for Track and Fields athletes and managers. Are you interested?

If you missed the 2/20/2013 meeting, please see Mr. Gott for paperwork. You need to give Mr. Gott the parent permission form and a few additional forms depending if this is the first time you participated in a sport at Southern HS: See: http://www.southernathletics.org/index.cfm?action=main.fileslinks .

I will schedule a makeup session of parents of Track and Field athletes to meet the coaches prior to the first meet.

Please see the files tab: http://www.southernathletics.org/index.cfm?action=main.teamfiles&id=12687 and view the Team Kick-Off Overview. Both athlete and parents must sign the pledge. Then download and fill out the form “Emergency Contact Form.”

The Track and Field Pledge and the Emergecy Contact Form go to Mr. Ellmore on the first day of practice. The other required forms go to Mr. Gott.

The startup schedule is posted under Track and Field. The first day of practice is March 1st. Because of the play, we will start practice at 2:30 PM. See: http://www.southernathletics.org/index.cfm?action=main.teamschedule&id=12687

There will be 1 initial Saturday single day practice and 1 double practice the following weekend. If we are making good strides during the week, we will keep it to five days after that. I reserve the option for Saturday to provide athletes with some special instruction or distance run training.

You will see in the kick-off presentation (under Track and Field files) that I plan to organize assistant coaches and managers around specific roles and responsibilities:

Sprints <200m & Hurdles & Relays
High Jump & Pole Vault
Throws
Jumps – Long & Triple
Mid 400-800m & Relays
Long Distance 1-2mi & Relays

There is a study hall from 2:20 to 3:50 daily for our team. "Student-Athletes" that are not involved in a club meeting, academic probation study hall, meeting with a teacher for help, or self-transporting to practice will be expected to attend study hall during this time and get homework done.

I plan to select an event captain for each of the sub-groups. I will expect the captains to help keep the groups organized at study hall, practice and meets. They are to be positive role models and leaders by example. They don't have to be the fastest or strongest. They need to be a student athlete in everyway. If we get a group of managers, I will select a captain of the managers. We need to develop leadership and teamwork.

Each day we will start with a team warm-up and end with a team cool down. We will break into instruction and training groups. There should never be any athlete standing around. They should either be training or "jogging" to another group for alternate events. Coaches will focus on instruction and critique of skills. We need to have a learning culture. When athletes are waiting their turn, they should be critiquing team mates to learn and visualize.

I have also setup a team email group: "Southern Track and Field 2013" at shs-tf-2013@ellmore.net. I will actively provide information to the team and parents through email and the web site. Athletes and parents will be added to the group. I ask that you keep up with my email notes so they can be reinforced at practice. I may provide too much information, so I will code the important information in the subject accordingly.

I am EXCITED to make this a great season!

Dream Large, Train Wise, Race Fast!

Coach Doug Ellmore (doug@ellmore.net, 301-807-2193)
